Meet the Grantees of Lagos Fashion Week’s Irapada Circular Design Initiative
With Lagos Fashion Week underway, sustainability is taking centre stage beyond the runway. This year, the fashion platform is expanding its commitment to more responsible practices through initiatives including the Green Access Room and the Irapada Circular Design Initiative, bringing together designers whose work explores circularity, craftsmanship and new approaches to fashion production. The Irapada initiative, meaning “redemption”, will spotlight its latest grantees, including Petre Taylor, Hertunba, Tuntunre, Ajanee, Emmy Kasbit, Dunsin Crafts, Eso by Liman, Ywande and Eki Kere. Their participation reflects a growing movement within African fashion towards systems that value resources, extend the life of garments and rethink how fashion is made and consumed. The initiatives form part of Lagos Fashion Week’s wider sustainability agenda. Last year, the platform won the Earthshot Prize, recognising its work in advancing more sustainable fashion systems. This year, it is taking that commitment further with the launch of its first policy, “The Blueprint for a Regenerative Fashion Future: A New Manifesto for African Fashion,” setting out a vision for a fashion industry that moves beyond sustainability towards regeneration. How Adefunke Adefule Built One of Nigeria’s Most Recognised Hair Brands
If you know who’s who in the Nigerian beauty industry, you definitely know Adefunke of @hairbyadefunkee. Adefunke Adefule did not build one of Nigeria’s most recognised hair brands on talent alone. Before leaving telecommunications, she invested in private training with leading professionals, tested hairstyling as a side business and discovered that she could make the equivalent of her monthly salary in just one week. In this conversation, Adefunke takes us through the journey from a one-woman service business to a thriving brand built on structure, a strong team and loyal clients. She shares why founders need to hire around their weaknesses, how to navigate difficult customer situations without taking them personally, and what a viral TikTok complaint taught her about protecting a business that had grown beyond her. She also opens up about the more personal side of ambition, including the friendships she could not maintain, her relationship with faith, plans to relocate, and why continuous education remains one of her biggest competitive advantages. Meji Meji Lands in Cardi B’s “Ah Ha” Music Video
Cardi B’s latest visual for “Ah Ha” has given Nigerian streetwear label Meji Meji a major international fashion moment. The rapper and her dancers are seen posted up in a salon, rollers in their hair and serving larger-than-life beauty-shop energy, but it is the fashion that really catches our eye. In the middle of all that campy salon glamour, Meji Meji is on full display, there were standout pieces like they wore standout pieces including the ‘Ko Mi Je Rush Rush’ Cycling Tee and ‘Sisi Ologe’ Top from the brand, bringing a distinctly Nigerian streetwear touch to the scene. Styled by Cardi B’s longtime stylist Kollin Carter, the looks prove once again that Nigerian fashion continues to find its way into some of the biggest pop culture moments around the world.
